Introduction

Mahmoud Mokhtar Cultural Center has the pleasure to announce the launch of the 4th Performance Art workshop + shows from the 14th of March till the 14th of April 2010.

In this group of annual events the Center targets PERFORMANCE ART. One of the recent evolving branches of the Visual Arts here in Cairo. As an entity in its own right, these lecture and performance events are intended to illuminate the thin thread that affiliates pure performance art and modern and postmodern theatrical trends. The focus will be on the evolution of this artistic practice and is intended to contribute to its continued existence in an era of artistic fusion.

Since 2007 and in accordance with the Center’s mission a performance art workshop has been held annually and has been given under the instruction of the dedicated visual and theatrical artists Sherif El Morsi and Mirette Michail. This workshop is also intended to permit the young artists to take advantage of the creative and collaborative possibilities inherent in the practice of performance art itself.

In this years workshop it is our intention to take advantage of the presence and experiences of the international talents. Towards the end of the workshop the experiences gained by the fusion of new thoughts and ideas from both Egyptian and International performance artists should contribute to give this form of art practice a more valorized and solid footing here in Egypt. The collaborative aspect of performance art in general facilitates a platform for sharing.

Notes on the Curator:   The performance event will be curated and moderated by artist Chadi Salama. He is an energetic young artist who has consistently collaborated during the past decade on both the national and international art scene. He accomplished this through his creative multimedia artworks that attracted a wide audience especially in the new millennium.

When I was approached to moderate and curate the 4th Performance Art workshop & shows in Mahmoud Mokhtar Cultural Center, I hesitated. Despite doing a number of Performance Art shows previously and manipulating Performance Art beside Installations and Video Art in some of my multimedia art works, I felt that an event like that needs a lot of courage and disciplines both from Center organizing the event and from the artist who’ll accept the responsibility of moderating such a happening (especially with the lack of theatrical background!).

But on deeper thought and search I realized that the Performance Art is a pure Visual Arts form in its own right, no matter how close it might get to theatrical and performing arts shows.
Performance Art is an independent Visual Arts form and a special Visual Arts medium.
